What is Base64 Encoder/Decoder?

Base64 represents binary data using 64 printable characters, so it can travel safely through text-only channels like JSON, e-mail or URLs. Encoding makes data about 33% larger; decoding reverses it exactly.

Useful for

  • Reading Base64 values found in configs, tokens or APIs.
  • Embedding small pieces of data in JSON or HTML.
  • Preparing HTTP Basic authentication headers.

How to use

  1. Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. Paste the text or the Base64 value.
  3. Turn on URL-safe mode when the value goes into a URL, then copy the result.

Examples

Encode a short text

Input
hello, world
Output
aGVsbG8sIHdvcmxk

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 a form of encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption: anyone can decode it. Never use it to protect passwords or secrets.

What is URL-safe Base64?

A variant that replaces + and / with - and _ and usually drops the = padding, so the value fits in URLs and file names.

Does it work with accents and emoji?

Yes. Text is converted to UTF-8 before encoding and back after decoding, so accents, emoji and any other language round-trip correctly. If a Base64 value holds binary data such as an image, the tool says so instead of showing garbage.
